Thranduil’s Silver Cloak (The Hobbit)

Desolation of Smaug Thranduil Costume and Props

Photos by Brian Marchman (L) and Kevin Moore (R)

The most recognizable of Thranduil’s costumes. The coat is self-patterned and made from loosely woven jacquard (of which the back side is used).  The coat closes up the front with hooks and eyes and the collar is heavily interfaced.

The cloak is made from the underside of a woven upholstery fabric, lined in heavy rust colored satin.

The coat is worn with handmade grey velveteen trousers, and pewter boots which began life as basic black boots that were modified heavily. I sewed additional vinyl panels on to the tops and painted everything pewter.

The brooch is made with apoxy sculpt built around a swarovski gem. The staff is made from a dowel rod covered in apoxy sculpt that is hand-carved with a tree-bark texture. The top detailing is also apoxy sculpted. Everything is handpainted.

The crown was made from wire with Sculpey Prema molded around it. Fake “wheat” positioned around the crown completes the look.

This costume won DragonCon’s “The Chosen” alongside my Tauriel. Both were completely handmade by me.
